What do AFA's Field and Education Councils do?
AFA publishes separate Field and Education Council rosters. This guide explains the work visitors can follow through each council and where to verify current members.
Which councils does AFA list?
AFA's public councils page lists a Field Council and an Education Council, with people and roles under each heading. The councils are part of the Association's work, but their roster is not the same document as AFA's Board of Directors, its professional staff directory, or its committees list. For formal governance documents, use our governance guide and the current official sources it links.
What does the Field Council work on?
AFA's Chapters and Field Leaders page credits a Field Council training subcommittee with modules for Chapter, State and Region operations. Its Mission Membership Field FAQ says the Field Council helps confirm which Chapters are active and ready to welcome new members. AFA's Field Leader Resources holds current operating materials. If your question is how to run or contact a local organization, begin with our Chapter directory, Regions, and field resources guide; the council roster alone does not assign a member to a Chapter or approve a policy request.
What does the Education Council work on?
AFA's September 2026 Education Council update describes education awards, Teacher of the Year recognition, the Pitsenbarger Full Measure Award, and 2026–27 objectives. It also describes a planned Programs Team and Educator Base Visit Team; those are plans in a dated update, not a guarantee that either team is operating now. To find an actual program, compare our education programs hub, educator grants, Teacher of the Year, and Pitsenbarger Awards before using AFA's live application rules.
Who serves, and how can I ask about participation?
On October 13, 2026, AFA's published roster named Chris Canada as Field Council chair and Gary Copsey as Education Council chair. Names and assignments can change, so use the live AFA roster for a current member or title. The September Education Council update welcomed three people for the coming AFA year, but an announcement is not a substitute for the current roster. AFA's councils page asks that roster corrections go to [email protected]; its education update invites interest through [email protected]. Joining AFA or a Chapter does not itself confer a council seat.
