AFA support for wounded Airmen, Guardians, and caregivers

Understand how AFA works alongside the Air Force Wounded Warrior program, what kinds of assistance it describes, and where to ask about an individual need.

How the two programs fit together

AFW2 provides personalized support and advocacy to eligible wounded, ill, or injured Airmen and Guardians. AFA's Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program adds donor-supported assistance for service members, caregivers, and families where its program can help. AFA established the program in 2011. For a referral to AFW2, start with AFA's official referral guidance; for AFA support, use the AFA program page.

Choose the relevant support path

  • Financial assistance: AFA describes grants for needs such as short-term housing or utilities, gas cards, and adaptive sports equipment. Requests must go through an AFW2 Recovery Care Coordinator or Non-Medical Case Manager; AFA pays approved vendors or bill collectors rather than sending checks to service members. Read AFA's current grant process before asking about a case.
  • Travel assistance: AFA describes travel support for medically retired Airmen and Guardians whom AFW2 identifies as benefiting from a Warrior CARE event or related wounded-warrior activity. Check the official travel-assistance page for current conditions.
  • Caregivers: AFA describes opportunities and practical support that help caregivers take part in community and resiliency activities. See AFA's caregiver page.
  • Warrior CARE events: AFA provides activities and on-site support at AFW2 events. See what AFA provides.

How the Memorial to Memorial Ride supports the program

The U.S. Air Force Cycling Team raises funds for this AFA program through its annual Memorial to Memorial Ride. Our ride guide explains the dated 2026 result and directs potential riders and donors to the official organizers. Fundraising is separate from AFA’s eligibility and referral process for individual assistance.

Where to ask about help

If you or someone you know may need assistance, use AFA's published program contact and request guidance and review the relevant official page above. An AFW2 coordinator or case manager must coordinate grant requests; this guide is not an application or an eligibility decision. For local AFA connections, explore the Chapter directory.
