United Forces & Families: AFA support for military families
Find family-focused publications, scholarships, events, and the distinct quality-of-life grant path for AFA Chapters.
For spouses and military families
United Forces & Families connects quality-of-life issues with AFA's support for Airmen, Guardians, spouses, and their families. Individuals can explore the Engage publication series, compare AFA scholarships, find AFA events, or review AFA membership options. AFA's program page invites military spouses and family members to join at no cost; check the official join route for current terms.
Where can I read or contribute to Engage?
AFA’s Engage issue library collects military-family perspectives and practical topics, including family readiness, childcare, wellness, community, and support for Guardians’ families. Some issues have an online reader and a PDF; use the format offered on each official issue card. AFA also invites prospective authors to share their information through its Write for Engage page. That form expresses interest in contributing; AFA controls any editorial follow-up, acceptance, and publication. It is not the path for an individual assistance request.
For Chapters planning a quality-of-life project
AFA's grant page says its Chapters may apply for up to $1,000 to support a project benefiting Department of the Air Force families. The current structure provides $500 initially and up to another $500 as a match. Examples AFA names include childcare, education, health, housing, food access, spouse employment, morale, and professional development. These are project ideas, not a promise that a proposed expense will be approved.
Applications are considered on a rolling basis while funds remain. AFA says it will notify Chapters within 30 days after submission and requires an after-action report when the project is complete. The separate Focus Grant route is invitation-only. Read AFA's live rules and application link before planning a budget or applying; the grant is a Chapter application, not an individual-family cash benefit.
Find a local connection
Start with the AFA Chapter directory to locate an organization near an installation. A directory listing does not mean a Chapter has an active grant or can promise assistance; contact it to learn what it is doing locally. For help specific to a wounded, ill, or injured service member or caregiver, see our separate Wounded Airmen & Guardians guide.
