AFA Field Leader Training Modules: a guide by role

Find the current AFA training library and use its role matrix to choose the right Chapter, State or Region lessons.

Where should a new field leader start?

First identify whether your position is at the Chapter, State or Region level and whether it is elected or appointed. AFA's August 2026 recommended training matrix has separate tables for Chapter elected officers, Chapter appointed officers, State leaders and Region leaders. Find your role's column before opening a video. The matrix is AFA's recommendation for those roles; check its live version if your duties or AFA guidance change.

What do A, X and S mean in the training matrix?

A marks training recommended when someone first assumes a role. X marks primary training for that role. S marks secondary training to take after the primary material. The matrix also uses A* for assumption training when the role has access to an AFA organization email account. Read the matrix's own legend and role column before treating a module as required for your position; these letters describe recommendations, not a certificate or completion record.

Where are the official modules?

AFA's Field Leader Training Modules page groups videos and materials under Administration, Communications, Leadership, Membership, Mission Membership, Advocacy, Other Programs and Organization. It also links officer training for Chapters, States and Regions. Use the current official page for the videos and its post-video survey; AFA says the survey is taken after returning to the page, rather than inside the video. AFA Connect does not host the videos or record training completion.

How does training connect to Chapter work?

The modules explain field-leader tasks; the Field Leader Resources guide points to AFA's current operations documents, bylaws templates and forms. Find your organization in our Chapter directory or browse Regions. For leadership development beyond a role's basic modules, see the Emerging Leader guide. The separate AFA Field Leader Portal handles authorized member and officer records; a public Chapter profile or training video does not provide portal access.
