The Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) General E.W. Rawlings Chapter participated in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Joint Air Reserve Station’s annual Family Day event on August 1 to support the 934th Airlift Wing community and drive AFA membership.

The 934th Family Day event was made possible by an AFA United Forces & Families Program grant. Events such as Family Day honor troops and their families for their services and sacrifices. Often, these events are the only time the entire command and their families can spend together. Fat Lorenzo’s, a local Italian eatery in Minneapolis, provided a pasta lunch with gelato. Several games, giveaways, and other family activities enabled the command, service families, and their children to spend time together while also boosting morale.

Boosting morale is a core quality-of-life goal of the United Forces & Families Program, which supports Air Force and Space Force units and their families. The program routinely funds events of this kind, and the 934th Family Day is one example of that support in action.

Rawlings Chapter President Sarah Wise worked with 934th leadership to set up an AFA booth onsite. Wise, Rawlings Chapter Executive Vice President Tom Theis, and Vice President of Membership Janelle Gates informed families about AFA and Rawlings Chapter activities at the booth.

Additionally, AFA shared the booth with Stephen Kolcinski, a Rawlings Chapter life member, who represented the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, where he informed families about employment opportunities post-military service.

Kolcinski also spoke with event participants about AFA and the impact the organization has had on him. He created coasters and key tags bearing the AFA logo, which proved popular among eventgoers and raised the organization’s visibility.

Chapters interested in hosting or supporting programming supporting quality of life imitative for Airmen, Guardians, or their Families can apply for a United Forces & Families Program grant at afa.org/forcesandfamilies/qol-grants.
